2011 Taxes and Social media

It is now tax season, and many people are turning to Social Media for reviews on the best tax programs and tax preparation services.  Interestingly, I do not see many tax services taking advantage of social media to market their products.  With so many companies trying to be heard, I am very surprised that H&R Block and Intuit’s Turbotax are not leveraging trending topics on Twitter. … [Read more...]

Twitter Social Media Tools #1

I decided that I am starting a column based on the tools that I currently use to help make Twitter more automated and maximize time spent.  The first tool I am going to write about is Justunfollow.com.  I use Just Unfollow on EZ Local Savings as well as my personal Twitter.  I also used Just Unfollow when I worked for Mosaic Sales Solutions on the Dell University account. Just … [Read more...]

Do we really ever “grow up?”

Today was one of the best days that I’ve had in a while, and it wasn’t so because of anything that happened before about 3:30 pm.  Come to think about it, I was having a pretty frustrating day until 3:30 pm.  But the major change in that was getting a text from one of my dear friends asking to go to The Hangar in Amherst, MA for all you can eat wings. The Hangar has all you can eat … [Read more...]

The Secret of Life

I was laying here in bed, thinking about how much I accomplished today (and then I realized I forgot to update my blog) and realized that I didn’t accomplish everything I wanted to.  I’m pretty sure that it’s one of those lessons; Life has interruptions, distractions, and missing pieces.  Life isn’t perfect. And with all those interruptions, distractions, and missing pieces, life … [Read more...]

Newt Gingrich won South Carolina, Mitt Romney winning Social Media

It’s super interesting to me that Newt Gingrich won the South Carolina vote.  I thought that Mitt Romney was going to win New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Florida, which would have won him the nomination.  Mitt Romney, however, is still winning if you take a look at the social media influence. ZDNet provides the following analysis of the GOP’s Social Media: Facebook User … [Read more...]

SpiderOak, a superior alternative to Dropbox

I've been using Dropbox for a couple of years, and had generally liked the experience.  In fact, I started using Dropbox as an undergraduate at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst when writing my thesis, because of the ability to keep the document synced and work on it wherever I was.  Recently (as in a couple months ago), I haven't been as pleased with Dropbox, and decided to look at … [Read more...]

Forget SOPA and PIPA, reality TV causes piracy

It’s interesting to me that today, SOPA and PIPA were finally destroyed (at least for this year).  It’s great that SOPA and PIPA are now dead, but is piracy truly a problem?  Is there something that is destroying jobs and Hollywood in general?  I believe there is, and the main cause is reality television. Think about this: Reality TV has to be costing a lot of people jobs, because … [Read more...]

Moodle to study for midterms!

Last weekend, I spent a vast majority of my Saturday making quizzes for my students to review for their midterms for my class.  The Moodle system is powerful, but not very intuitive, at least from a teacher’s standpoint.  But, providing the practice quizzes was more of a priority than the backend follies with Moodle in its current form. I made four quizzes, one quiz for each of the … [Read more...]

What is social media? 2012 Edition

All too often, people are thinking that social media is just Facebook and Twitter.  Social media is a lot more than just updating statuses, and I will post what social media is evolving into in 2012.  Social media will be an ever evolving concept, but these are some good guidelines to focus on. Social Media is a way to meet the following needs. Communications: You are able to update … [Read more...]

SOPA and PIPA still exist, have serious implications for SEO

The world of SEO will be a different place if SOPA and PIPA are passed and signed into law here in the United States.  Many had thought that the Stop Online Piracy Act had been killed, but it turns out that Representative Lamar Smith is planning on reviving the act.  When are our representatives going to realize that we’ll vote them out if they continue to vote in favor of acts that hurt … [Read more...]
